Types of Buisness Organizations

There are many businesses around the world, ranging from objectives, services, products and missions that they all have in mind. We cannot possibly keep track of it all, but we can try to classify them into 8 main types of business organizations.

Private limited company is a business that is owned by shareholders, usually family members, as the company cannot sell shares to the general public.
A good example of this type of business is Aldi. Aldi is a food and staples retailing business. It is the parent company of the American Trader Joe's and has hundreds of stores open worldwide. Aldi sells food, hygiene, and other necessary household products. Aldi is a private limited company as it was started by two brothers, Theo and Karl Albercht. After successful years they split Aldi into Aldi North and Aldi South, and divided regions of the world to expand their stores into.

Public limited company is a limited company, with the legal rights to sell shares to the general public, and the share price is quoted on the national stock exchange. A famous example is Colgate. This company focuses on the production, distribution and provision of household, health care and personal products, such as soaps, detergents, and oral hygiene products (including toothpaste and toothbrushes, which they are the most famous for). Under its "Hill's" brand, it is also a manufacturer of veterinary products.

Public corporation is a nationalized industry, it is an enterprise owned and controlled by the state. A great example of a public corporation is AT&T. It is an American phone company that offers telecommunication services. It also offers equipment as well as directory advertising and publishing services in the United States and internationally. Although most public sector organizations do not have profit as their main objective, AT&T is quickly becoming at the top of this industry in the U.S.

Non-profit organization is any organization that has aims other then making a profit, and is usually run by a voluntary board. A well know example from U.K. is Animal Aid, which was established in 1977 and works in peaceful means, to end animal cruelty. This organization aims to educate the public, especially young people, to a sense of moral responsibility towards the animals. They promote a lifestyle that does not involve the abuse of animals. They focus on teaching, spreading awareness and supporting similar causes.

Non-governmental organization or NGOs are legally constituted , with no participation or representation of any government. In Slovakia, SGI or Slovak Governance Institute is exactly this type of organization. They were established with a focus on good governance and public policy. The SGI has implemented a number of projects in different fields related to policy-making. It is a organization that works on crime, in prevention, and anti-corruption. It does not work with the government, and has no governmental representation.

Pressure groups are non-profit organizations that aim to change the behavior and decisions of either governments, or other powerful organizations. One powerful and worldwide known pressure group is the World Wide Fund for Nature or the WWF. The group says its mission is "to halt and reverse the destruction of our environment".Currently, much of its work focuses on the conservation of three sections that contain most of the world's biodiversity: forests, freshwater ecosystems, and oceans and coasts. Among other issues, it is also concerned with endangered species, pollution and climate change.

Social enterprise is a company who's main goal is not profit making. Making a profit may be one of their objectives, however, it is not as significant as the organization's social objectives. TOMS Shoes was founded on a simple premise: For every pair you purchase, TOMS will give a pair of shoes to a child in need. One for One. In this way, the company makes profit, but it's main goal is to help poorer communities.

Public-private partnership is involvement of the private sector, in financial investment or management, in public sector projects aimed to benefit the public.
In the U.S. there was a unit established by the Ministry of Finance, to bring together new partnerships. Their goal is to " promote partnership arrangements that draw on the strengths of both the Public and Private sectors by encouraging innovative and cost effective forms of public service delivery." Some of their objectives include acting as a natural focus point for PPP initiatives; and engaging with key stakeholders to develop a practical and transparent procurement process.
